• A high proportion of legumes in the mixture will allow the accumulation of a large amount of biological nitrogen, reducing the need for mineral nitrogen for subsequent crops
• The roots of the narrow-leaved lupine will loosen deeper layers of soil, lifting nutrients to the top soil layer, promoting available access to other plants
• Bristle oat and fodder radish will reduce the incidence of pests and disease pathogens
• The plants of the mixture also are suitable to grow in lighter soils
