NIKLAS

Avena sativa L.

An early, high yielding large-grain oat with good milling quality

  • An early variety that has very high yield potential
  • Grain weight is the highest among the early varieties
  • The proportion of kernels below 2 mm in the harvest is small
  • The hectoliter weight is good
  • The protein and fat contents of Niklas are better than the average
  • The shell content of Niklas is quite low and the core is white
  • Especially suitable for mill use
  • Although it is early, it can compete with later varieties in yield
  • Vegetation period (in Finland) – around 90 days
  • Yield – 5.7 t/ha
  • Plant height – 88 cm
  • Stem – strong
  • Resistance to disease – at the level of other early oats
  • If direct seeding is used, treatment and disease control is recommended
  • Grain – white
  • 1000 grains weight– 39.3 g
  • Large, i.e. the share of grains larger than 2.5 mm – 52.8%
  • Small, i.e. the share of grains smaller than 2 mm – 4.3%
  • Hectoliter weight – 52.9 kg/hl
  • Excellent quality grains
  • Protein content – 14.1 %
  • Protein yield – 679 kg/ha
  • Grain husk content – 22.0 %
  • Quality meets the needs of the mill industry, used for food
  • Can also be used for feed
  • Suitable for growing in all types of soil, but best suited for mineral clay soils
  • When growing in better soils, it is recommended to use stem shortening means
  • The optimal nitrogen rate in good soils is 60-80 kg/ha. In order to increase the protein content, the N rate can be increased to 120-130 kg/ha by dividing it (2/3 given before sowing)
  • PK fertilizer is applied in the spring, depending on the soil. Manganese is preferred.

In organic trials:

  • Lodging – 35 %
  • Weight of 1000 grains – 37.4 g
  • Hectoliter weight – 56.4 kg/hl
  • Protein content – 12.1 %
  • Fat content – 6.20 %
  • Starch content – 48.8 %
  • Grain husk content – 24.4 %
  • Grains smaller than < 2 mm – 3.23 %
  • Grains 2.0-2.5 mm – 31.67 %
  • Grains larger than >2.5 mm – 15.0 %

The varietal parameters may differ from those indicated here when the testing circumstances differ from quondam

Recommended sowing rate: 400-450 seeds/m2, or 210-230 kg/ha. At unfavourable conditions recommendation to increase sowing rate to 550-600 seeds/m2
